Read, Watch, Wear, Eat, Do: January Inspiration

January 04, 2019

We’re kicking off 2019 with a brand-new blog series: Read, Watch, Wear, Eat, Do. Every month, we’ll be sharing our most stylish and inspiring finds in each category, from creative recipes to wardrobe essentials. First up, five things we’re loving for January.

Read
Becoming: If you missed this best-selling memoir from former First Lady Michelle Obama, which was released in November 2018, there’s no better book to start off your new year. Becoming has been praised for its graceful writing style, its candor, and its quiet sense of humor. All of these elements make for an incredibly engaging and inspirational read, as well as a personal and insightful look at the Obama family’s journey to and inside the White House. With more than 1.4 million copies already sold, Becoming holds the title of best book to read this season.

Watch
Salt, Fat, Acid, Heat: Winter is the perfect time to head into the kitchen and experiment with a few new recipes, and we can’t think of better cooking inspiration than this Netflix series starring Samin Nosrat. Salt, Fat, Acid, Heat is adapted from Nosrat’s best-selling cookbook of the same name, which received a James Beard Award. In each episode, she travels to a new location to explore the essential elements of cooking through local cuisine. Nosrat makes a warm, welcoming, and knowledgeable guide—perfect inspiration for the at-home chefs among us.

Wear
Your Coziest Sweater: Once the holiday season winds down, January can start to feel pretty gloomy. To combat the effects of cold and snowy weather, treat yourself to some especially comfy clothes. Cozy up in a chunky sweater, light a fire, pick up a new book, and settle in for a relaxing evening at home.

Eat
Golden Milk: At the height of cold and flu season, we’re eager to try any recipe that offers healthy benefits along with delicious flavor. Our pick for January: golden milk! This warm and comforting beverage combines your choice of milk with a variety of spices including ginger, cinnamon, and turmeric (which gives golden milk its distinctive color). Turmeric offers health-boosting anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, so it’s great for fighting colds, congestion, sore throats and more. (And it’s tasty enough that you’ll want a second cup.)

Do
Make Time for Self-Care: In the spirit of renewal, January is a great time to refresh your daily routine with a focus on self-care. If you’re inclined to make New Year’s resolutions, commit to trying out a new activity that nourishes your mind and body—join a yoga studio in your neighborhood, establish a daily meditation practice, or simply start taking an evening walk to appreciate the natural world. Also consider finding new ways to connect with your community. Take an art class with friends, seek out volunteer opportunities, or explore that museum you pass by every day. Finally, look for simple ways to wind down and care for your body (these seasonal beauty remedies are a great place to start).
