How to Maintain Glowing Skin in the Autumn

How to Maintain Glowing Skin in the Autumn

October 27, 2018

Summer is officially over. And while we are super excited for all the fun autumn brings – hello, cold weather and apple cider - we have to admit that we are a little bummed about losing our gorgeous summer glow.

It’s the time of year when your gorgeous summer glow starts to fade, and your skin starts looking less than lovely. Let’s be real; your skin is probably beginning to look a little dull which is a total drag.

However, there are ways to maintain that lit from within glow even when the weather gets cold.

Is it easy? No, but nothing ever worth having is. But you’ll thank yourself in the end when everyone is giving your skin complements left and right.

To stay glowy all fall and winter long, you’ll have fake it till you make it. So, jump aboard the glow express – destination radiant skin.

Commit to Moisturizing

First things first, you MUST commit to moisturizing your skin. However, this doesn’t mean just slapping on cream and calling it a day. I’m talking about hydrating from the inside and out and topically. Spend every day guzzling that water to ensure your skin maintains moisture and elasticity. Next, make sure you are applying a moisturizer day and night. Oily skin girls that means you too. Most people with oily skin think that they can forgo moisturizer, but that’s a big no-no. Oddly enough, oily skin will produce more oil if not adequately hydrated. Find a great oil-free moisturizer that works for you. Now for my dry skin girls, I suggest layering a hydrating oil on top of your nightly moisturizer. This extra step will help keep our skin hydrated all night long. I also recommend applying a sleep mask a couple of nights a week for further moisturization.

My Picks:

Clinique Dramatically Different Moisturizing Lotion $28

First Aid Beauty Ultra Repair Cream Intense Hydration $30

Clinique Dramatically Different Moisturizing Gel (Oily Skin) $28

Exfoliating is quickest and most effective way to kick dull skin to the curb. Exfoliating removes the top layer of your skin and gets rid of any dry, flaky skin that’s lingering around. While many love a good physical exfoliator as I’ve gotten older, I’ve realized I much prefer a chemical exfoliator. Trust me; it’s not as scary as it sounds. My favorite chemical exfoliators are peel pads and exfoliating tonics. Peel pads are great because they are portioned out and easily disposable. Swipe and go – it doesn’t get much easier than that. Plus, peel pads and exfoliating tonics are much more effective than traditional physical scrubs. These babies exfoliate deeper levels of your skin and help your cells turn over faster. Peel pads are gentle enough to use daily which will help keep your skin in tip-top condition during the cold weather months. I find that my skin needs exfoliation every day during the colder weather – strange but true. Your skin needs exfoliation – so find a product and routine that works best for your skin type. Pay attention to your skin to make sure you aren’t over exfoliating.

My Picks:

First Aid Beauty Facial Radiance Pads $30

Pixie Glow Tonic $15

Create a routine

A strict skincare routine is a MUST during the colder weather months. When the weather gets cold you MUST take care of your skin day and night – this isn’t the time of year to be willy-nilly with your skincare. If the idea of a long, drawn-out skincare routine bores the pants off you, then don’t do one. Create a

simple, yet effective skincare routine that you can maintain day to day. Must haves include: a face wash, a toner, an exfoliator, a good day and night moisturizer, and daily SPF. Maybe throw in an anti-aging serum for good measure. A skincare routine like this should only take you about 5 minutes in the morning and at night. Maintain this routine, and your skin will thank you.

My Picks:

La Roche-Posay Hydrating Gentle Face Cleanser $14.99

Neutrogena Alcohol-Free Toner $7.99

Clinique Moisture Surge $39

Skin Ceuticals Sheer Physical UV Defense SPF 50 $34

Estee Lauder Advanced Night Repair $98.99

Big Picture Goals

Having great looking skin doesn’t just come from washing your face. Good skincare comes from your overall lifestyle. And you should think about your big-picture skincare goals. What you do now will affect your skin down the road. Eating healthy, wearing sunscreen, staying out of the sun, exercising, drinking water, and having a good skincare routine all play a part in having and maintaining glowing, beautiful skin. Creating an excellent skincare plan and incorporating your long-term skincare goals will help you do what you need to do every day. Let’s get super real, if you don’t want to look haggard and old by the time you hit 40 than wearing sunscreen daily is a MUST – no ifs, and, or buts. The sun is the number one skin ager. Think about and write down your big picture skincare goals and then write down what you can do each day to help make those goals a reality.

Fake it till you make it

When the weather is warm, and we’re sporting our, hopefully, fake tans, we don’t need much makeup to look good. Our skin is glowing, bronzed, hydrated and oh so fabulous. But when we lose that glow, we need a little help from our makeup bags. Enter foundation. Foundation can be your best friend when it comes faking glowing, lit from within the skin. And, picking the right formula can make a world of difference. If your skin is on the drier side, avoid matte foundations at all cost; instead look for foundations that are hydrating, and leave a dewy finish on the skin. Matte foundations are great for oily skin but look for ones that aren’t flat and still give a subtle glow. NARS Velvet Matte Skin Tint is a great option.

Another fake it till you make it tip? Bronzer. Think of bronzer as your best friend. Avoid shimmery bronzers as they are a dead giveaway; instead, opt for a bronzer with a satin or matte finish that will subtly enhance your complexion without making you look like an Oompa Loompa.

A highlighter is also a great secret weapon to help give your skin the glow it’s naturally missing.

One last tip is to apply a sunless tan to your face. One great one is Dr. Dennis Gross’  Alpha Beta Glow Pad Gradual Glow, which is one of the best 2-in-1 products on the market. This baby exfoliates your skin while applying a subtle self-tanner that gradually appears.  Glow, baby glow!

My Picks:

IT Cosmetics Your Skin But Better CC Cream $38

Too Faced Chocolate Soleil Matte Bronzer $30

Kevyn Aucoin Celestial Skin Highlighter $52

Keep a secret weapon handy

If you want to keep your skin looking glowing 24/7, you must have a hydrating mist handy at all times. Hydrating mists help refresh your face. And the best part is you can mist anywhere, anytime. Many mist-a-holics, mist on the hour, every hour to keep their skin looking perfect all day long.  A Hydrating mist gives your skin a dose of hydration which helps makes your makeup and skin look refreshed and on-point. It’s voodoo magic at its best.

My Picks:

La Roche Posay Thermal Spring Water Face Spray $9.99

Mario Badescu Facial Spray $7

Caudalie Beauty Elixir $18

Clinique Moisture Surge Face Spray $25.50
