Boot Season Is Here! 5 Fresh Ways to Style Your Favorite Pairs

October 24, 2018

Over the Knee Boots + Tunics: The combination of tall boots and a tunic is our favorite pick for transitional dressing. Early fall can bring the combination of cool mornings and warm, sunny afternoons—a challenge when it comes to choosing the day’s outfit! To stay comfortable as the weather changes, try pairing a breezy tunic with over the knee boots (and skip the tights so you can keep your cool). This look works best with fitted boots in a soft fabric like supple suede, which keeps their silhouette streamlined to balance out the flowy tunic above.

Calf-Height Boots + Midi Skirts: This trend combines two styles that might seem difficult to wear at first glance—boots and skirts that hit at mid-calf. While you might worry that these pieces will shorten the line of your leg, they work together perfectly to create a flattering and fashion-forward look. Starting with a midi skirt or dress, there are two ways to wear the trend. One: choose calf-height boots that hit a bit higher, so there’s some overlap between the top of the boot and your skirt. Two: select boots that hit just above the ankle, allowing a small gap on the leg. As with over the knee boots and tunics, this style works best with boots that have a snug fit to balance the volume of the skirt.

Cowboy Boots + Flowy Prints: One of this season’s key footwear trends is inspired by the Wild West. That’s right, cowboy boots are back! If you’re more of a city slicker, you might be reluctant to dip your toes into this Western-inspired look. However, cowboy boots are surprisingly versatile when paired with feminine pieces that are already in your closet. Try wearing Western-style boots with a flowy dress or skirt in a striking print; we especially love bold, dark florals on silk or chiffon. Avoid cowboy boots with jeans, dainty florals, or prairie dresses (unless you’re planning a Westworld-inspired Halloween costume).

Statement Ankle Boots + Laid-Back Jeans: Eye-catching ankle boots are another major trend for fall—think leopard, metallic, houndstooth, and velvet. To make sure your statement boots take center stage, pair them with casual, broken-in jeans. We love the look of shimmering boots peeking out from frayed cuffs, or boyfriend jeans rolled up to show an unexpected animal print. (Here are a few tips for getting the perfect cuff.) This trend is great for adding a pop of personality to simple jeans and sweater combination.

Classic Boots + Slouchy Socks: We all have that one perfect pair of boots—a knee-high style in black or brown that looks great with jeans, leggings, and dresses alike. If your staple boots need a subtle style upgrade for fall, try pairing them with socks or legwarmers that add a pop of color and texture. Choose a chunky knit in a seasonal shade like burgundy, forest green or oatmeal, and then scrunch the sock down slightly over the top of the boot for a cozy, casual look.
