A Guide To The Layered Look!

A Guide To The Layered Look!

September 28, 2018

As the cooler temperatures approach with the arrival of fall, fashion lovers are scrambling to find ways to stay warm while still looking chic. Enter the layered look.

The layered look is sophisticated and bougie but can also be totally confusing. I mean, no one wants to wind up looking like the Michelin man. Am I right? And trust us the layered look can easily translate as tragic.

Luckily for you, we’ve got some tips to help you correctly interpret this to-die-for fashion trend.

First off, create your base with a basic, lightweight top. Reach for a cami, a blouse, or a basic v-neck t-shirt in a neutral color. If you’re feeling bold go for stripes, polka-dots, or buffalo plaid. The fit is essential. To look slimmer keep your base layer fitted. Avoid tucking your shirt into your pants to keep things from getting too bulky but if you must tuck, only tuck in the front for a modern look.

Next, add another layer with a cardigan, sweater, or kimono. If you love bold, bright colors, this is the perfect time to add them in. Our Classic Long Knit Cardigan in a gorgeous mustard yellow would be one fabulous option. Another great pick is our Floral Print Secret Garden Kimono. Length and proportion are also crucial. More often than not your second layer should always be longer than the first and third layer, but again every outfit is different. Remember balance is key! Your goal is to find balance within your look and keep it from looking heavy and dowdy.

Finally, add a jacket or coat. Some great options include a leather jacket, a fur vest, a raincoat, or a teddy jacket. Think cropped. Ideally, you want the top layer to hit you somewhere between the bottom of your hips and your waist so that it’s super flattering and avoids making you look frumpy and puffy. However, if you want to rock a long-jacket then make sure your second layer is shorter and tight-fitted.

On MAJOR tip for the layered look is to find balance. A rule of thumb is to keep most of your layers on the lighter side and only add one chunkier piece like an oversized sweater, teddy coat, or oversized scarf.

Remember how we mentioned the Michelin man? Well, if you feel like you’re drowning in layers wrap a belt around your waist and over your coat or sweater to cinch your waist and slim your silhouette.

Another tip is to balance out your outfit with a slim, tight-fitting bottom. Avoid wide-leg pants or floaty skirts and instead go for fitted leggings, leather pants, or cropped skinny jeans.

Have fun with testing out the layered look until you find something that makes you happy. If you love it, then rock it!
