5 Packing Tips for a Weekend Getaway

5 Packing Tips for a Weekend Getaway

November 29, 2018

Most of us, however, dread a key step in travel preparation—packing. There’s nothing worse than peering into your closet the night before a trip and trying to choose the perfect outfits for the days ahead. Never mind shoes, toiletries, a book for the plane…and where did you put your passport again?! If this sounds familiar, never fear. We’ve gathered five tried-and-true packing tips from seasoned travelers, so you can pack to perfection for your next weekend away. Whether you’re hopping on a flight or setting out on a road trip, a well-packed bag takes some of the stress out of traveling, so you can focus on having fun and making memories.

  1. Keep It Light: When it comes to avoiding common travel headaches, packing light is often the best remedy. For weekend trips, stick to a small, soft-sided duffel bag that can fit in the overhead compartment if you’re flying. This will help you avoid an unexpected gate check and a long wait at baggage claim. Once you arrive at your destination, a smaller bag also won’t weigh you down on any unexpected detours. But, keeping things light is easier said than done. Limit your weekend bag to the essentials by focusing on shoes and accessories. Choose just two pairs of shoes: one comfortable option for walking and sightseeing, and a dressier pair for evenings on the town. Use lightweight accessories, like jewelry and scarves, to freshen up simple outfits instead of stuffing your bag with lots of statement pieces.

  1. Stay Organized: Once you’ve gotten to your destination, it’s time to have fun—and that doesn’t include digging through your bag for a sweater that’s gone M.I.A. or ironing your dress before dinner. Invest in a set of packing cubes that fit inside your weekend bag, so you can keep your outfits organized and prevent wrinkling. Try a trio of cubes: a large one for clothing, a smaller one for shoes and accessories, and a third to keep toiletries safely contained (especially important for liquids!). At the end of your trip, use one cube for dirty laundry to simplify unpacking when you get home.

  1. Pick Your Palette: If you’re feeling stumped when it comes to outfit planning, start by choosing a neutral color palette to build your weekend wardrobe. If you pack in a single palette—gray, navy and white, for example—it’s easy to mix and match your clothes throughout the trip. You’ll have lots of outfit options, and you can change things up last-minute if you’re faced with an unexpected spill or a shift in the forecast.

  1. Layer Up: Speaking of the forecast, packing for a weekend trip can be especially challenging in the colder months thanks to bulky boots and jackets. To avoid an overstuffed bag, stick to more adaptable layering pieces. We suggest a mix of t-shirts, sweaters, lightweight jackets, and scarves to stay cozy without committing to a full winter coat. If you’re worried about especially cold weather, add a thin, heat-trapping athletic layer below your everyday clothes for extra warmth.

  1. Grab & Go: The most easily forgotten items on any packing list are toiletries. There’s no worse feeling than arriving at your destination to discover that your mascara, allergy medicine, and hairbrush are still on the counter at home. If you’re a frequent traveler, consider creating a dedicated toiletry case with miniature versions of your beauty staples, plus any essential medications. Before a trip, you can simply toss your travel kit into your bag without worry.
