3 Fresh Ways to Wear Necklaces This Season

3 Fresh Ways to Wear Necklaces This Season

September 30, 2018

From dainty pendants and sentimental lockets to trendy chokers and bold strands of chunky beads, necklaces are among the most well-loved accessories in any wardrobe. They’re also the most versatile, capable of adding color and sparkle to transform even the simplest outfit. When styling with necklaces, go beyond a straightforward strand with these three creative ways to wear the staples of your jewelry collection. You may find yourself revisiting long-forgotten pieces from past seasons, or looking at your most frequently worn necklaces in a brand-new light.

  1. Layer Up: We all know fall is prime time for layering, but this seasonal style can extend beyond flannel button-downs and cozy sweaters. If your jewelry box is overflowing with necklaces, try wearing two or three together to create an intricately layered collection. When choosing necklaces to layer, find a unifying feature—like a type of metal or stone that’s used in all the pieces—then add variety with length and texture. Great pairings include a bold choker with a longer pendant or a trio of delicate strands in assorted lengths.

  1. Reverse It: Have a favorite necklace that’s in need of an update? Try wearing it backward! Pick out a longer necklace you love, and then flip it around so the pendant hangs down your back. You’ll get the look of a choker in the front, plus some surprising sparkle when you turn around.

Backward necklaces have long been a red carpet favorite, but they’re a quirky way to accessorize everyday outfits, too. This look is especially striking with open back tops and dresses, which allow the necklace to take center stage. A reversed necklace works best when it doesn’t have an unsightly clasp, so try out this trend with a lariat or a necklace that’s strung as a continuous loop.

  1. Accent a Neckline: Traditional wisdom says that you should avoid necklaces when wearing an item with a unique neckline, but we’re inclined to disagree. If you have a favorite top with a noteworthy neckline, the right necklace can be used to accentuate its shape.

With lots of turtlenecks, collars, and cowls, fall is the perfect time to try out new necklace-plus-neckline combinations. Choose a lengthy strand with a large pendant to elongate the silhouette of a turtleneck, or nestle a dainty charm among the folds of a cowl neck for a subtle glimpse of sparkle. Our personal favorite for fall—especially for an updated office look—is a collared shirt buttoned all the way up with a shorter statement necklace tucked below the collar, so you see just a peek of the strand.
